Top 100 Toys: 1920s Through 2000s

I was recently browsing through Time Magazine's website and came across an article that really brought me back to my childhood. The article is titled All-Time 100 Greatest Toys and covers toys from every decade from the last century starting in the 1920s. You can find the original article by following the title link.

I've chosen my favorite toy from each decade and will share them with you in this blog post. While I wasn't alive when the majority of these toys were released, I still played with some form of them when I was a kid.

Prepare for nostalgia blast off....5....4....3...2....1

And we have lift off:

1920s

Ah, the Yo-Yo. While the one pictured obviously isn't one from the 1920's, it is more like one that I played with when I was younger. I remember always wanting to become a Yo-Yo master, but always ended up hurting myself instead. I gave up on Yo-Yoing really quickly. Haha.

1930s

Second on the list. Army Men. This one is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I had a huge tin of old school Army Men that my grandfather gave me when I was about 6 years old. I played with them every chance I had. As a matter of fact, I might go dig them out of the attic after this post. :)

1940s

This one has to be on everyones list. Who never played with Legos? That's a stupid question, everyone played with Legos when they were little. I often times made forts out of Legos for my Army Men. Yeah, I thought I was the coolest kid on the block.

1950s

Play-Doh. I also got a huge bucket of this stuff from my grandfather when I was little. I thought I was going to become the next Michelangelo. I also know that I wasn't the only one who tried to eat this stuff despite the nasty salty flavor. Over and over.

1960s

Rock'em Sock'em Robots. Honestly, I don't know why I enjoyed playing with these so much. I rarely ever convinced anyone to play with me. Probably because I'm too boss. So I ended up playing with myself. Not boss. Anyways, this is definitely a staple of my childhood.

1970s
Stretch Armstrong. Simply addictive. I also don't know why this caught the hearts of many aspiring kid wrestlers. But it did, and I loved it. Often I would devise ways to rip his arms and legs off, but to no avail.

1980s

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Enough said.
Am I right?

1990s

Super Soaker! Living in Florida, this was the thing to have. I used mine practically every day of summer with every kid on the block. Until one day, some creeper came by in his car and started spraying kids with a urine filled super-soaker. True story.

ALRIGHT. THAT'S IT!
I didn't do the 2000s because all of the toys from that section were lame.

Let me know which toys you loved best from your child hood.
Either from the list in the article here or just from memory.
Hope you guys enjoyed.

I remember my water cannon. I used to get all my neighbors soaking wet!

I actually had all of those...Although I remember my army men and legos were the most played with. I, amazingly, developed a set of rules for my army men very akin to Warhammer 40k (before I knew what it was) just because I hated not winning because no one could decide who "I shot you first" was.

Also, those furry worm thingies which you control with a string around your finger are also freaking awesome!

Lego have been the biggest toy for me, but I grew up in the 90s. Great list I had a lot of these toys. They have been running this long because they are classic.

@Waywardly
@GodsSin.blogspot.com

I actually already do. My focus and priority for the game reviews are on M-Rated titles that are going to be popular over anything else so that parents know exactly what they are looking at when they purchase a game.

Great post! The photo of the Play-Doh sea monster, under "1950s", is a picture I took of one of my kids' inventions. Can you add photo credit to Tim Pierce, with a link to the original image at https://www.flickr.com/photos/qwrrty/1872810999/? Thanks :-)
